Instruction course for interested people over the age of 18 in the winter/summer season 2025

The instruction course is for anyone who has never rowed before or has very limited experience with rowing. Rowing is a great sport! Since rowing is a sport that takes place on the water, safety is important. Therefore, we have made the following checklist, which can give you an indication of whether rowing may be something for you:

  • Don't be afraid of water
  • You must be able to see and hear/walk fine with both glasses and hearing aids
  • You can swim 300 m without a break
  • You must have full mobility in your knees, back and arms as well as a good balance
  • You can train for about 30 minutes with moderate exertion without a break

Rowing is a technical sport and can be difficult at first. It is therefore important that you come at least 1-2 times a week at the beginning of your course, so that you do not have to start over with the technique every time you are out rowing.

Rowing is a sport that takes a little more time than many other sports. You should expect 2 1/2 - 3 hours each time. You have to rig the boat and put it in the water, row, and when you get home, the boats have to be unrigged and washed.

It is volunteers who are behind everything that goes on in the club, this also applies to the instruction. Therefore, you must also be a little outreach yourself during the process.

Rowing is a sport where we are dependent on each other, for example, there must always be 3 people for you to be able to get out and row in an inrigger. On the other hand, it is a very social sport where in addition to exercising and getting fresh air, we also have fun and talk and get to see Copenhagen harbour, maybe docked and drink coffee somewhere. Look forward to many fantastic experiences in Københavns Roklub.

Our instructional course will cover the following elements:

  • Guided tour of the club and the boat hall
  • Introduction to safety procedures, equipment, and handling of the boat
  • Rowing technique (first on the rowing machine, then in the rowing boat and of course on the water)
  • Rowing commands

Københavns Roklub provides:

  • Coaches (one coach per 2 rowers). All our coaches are volunteers and experienced rowers, most of them are certified by the Danish Rowing Federation
  • Equipment (e.g. boats, oars and life jackets)

You bring:

  • A positive attitude!
  • A bottle of water.
  • A packed lunch.
  • Appropriate clothing. Preferably tight-fitting and preferably several layers (e.g. a rain jacket and hat if necessary).
  • Sneakers or closed flats
  • Sunglasses or cap, sunscreen and hat to protect you from the sun.
  • You will be able to bring smaller belongings on the boat, but we recommend waterproof bags. Alternatively, you can lock your belongings on land in a locker in the clubhouse.

Fees

The summer course fee is 2100 DKK and both the instruction course and three months club membership (currently 940 DKK). The fee allows you to participate in the club's various activities as well as use of our indoor training facilities. At the end of the course, an instructor will release you to the world of rowing. You are welcome to participate in all activities that the club offers. You can find descriptions of the different groups and their training programs on our website in "the little book". In September, there is an official ceremony where you must be "baptized" as a new rower, followed by dinner and a party. And if you reach 1000 km on the water during the season, we have a special surprise for you!

Plan for introductory courses in the winter season 2025:

When you sign up for the winter course, you pay 2100 DKK when registering, this is for the instruction in ergometer (indoor rowing) and instruction on the water in the spring as well as a 3-month membership fee.

It is possible to start in early January, early February or early March. The courses will be as follows:

  • You will be instructed to exercise the exercise machine by an instructor 2-4 times. It takes place on Mondays at 18-19 starting 06.01.25 in January and in February 03.02.24 and in March 03.02.24.
  • Then follow our other winter ergometer classes.
  • In April, or when the weather is right, you will be offered instruction for rowing on the water. This will be done by you, together with 2-4 other new rowers and 1-2 instructors, finding times for rowing that suit everyone. When you have been on the water 4-6 times with your instructor, you will be released and can sign up for the teams you would like to train with.

You sign up for the instruction by filling out the form below and sending it off. After this, you will be notified if you have been admitted to the class and must then immediately pay the course fee.

Plan for introductory courses in the summer season 2025:

During the summer season, we offer 4 introductory courses, all of which follow the structure below:

  1. The instruction course begins on a weekend, both Saturday and Sunday 9.30 – 16.00 and it is a requirement that you can participate both days.
  2. After that, you must attend at least 4 training sessions in the next 2 weeks. These take place on Wednesdays 17.00- approx. 19.00 where there will be instructors, but there will be the opportunity for rowing most days.
  3. When your instructor assesses that you know the rowing technique well enough and you can understand and command the most important commands, you will be released and can participate in all posted rowing trips.
  4. Talk to your instructor about what will happen next and what would suit you and sign up for one of the many activities within KR.

We offer start-up at the following times:

  • Course 1: Weekend 26 and 27 April 2025, both days 9.30 to approx. 16.00, + 4 training sessions in the next 2 weeks
  • Course 2: Weekend 10 and 11 May 2025 both days 9.30 to approx. 16.00, + 4 training sessions in the next 2 weeks
